Crotamiton is commonly used in the treatment of filariasis, scabies and strongyloidiasis, to treat itchy bumps on the skin caused by onchocerciasis.

How Crotamiton Works

Crotamiton is a topical antifungal and antiparasitic agent. Crotamiton harms the motor system of mites that causing Filariasis, Scabies, Strongyloidiasis and Onchocerciasis, which renders them immobile. It also has antipruritic actions by inhibiting histamine, serotonin and PAR-2 receptors.

Alcohol Safe

There is no known interaction studies have been performed due to crotamiton is applied topically. However, Crotamiton contains alcohol that will cause skin irritation. Hence, application Crotamiton with alcohol onto the skin will cause more irritation, but no interaction if alcohol is being consumed.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Crotamiton may be harmful when used during pregnancy. No adequate data in pregnant women to show teratogenic or genotoxic risk for crotamiton. However, abnormalities of foetal development were observed following administration of corticosteroids to pregnant animals. Crotamiton cream may contain corticosteroid which a drug used to treat itchiness. Please consult your doctor to know the details of Crotamiton content.

Lactation Limited Data

There is no studies performed to know either Crotamiton is being excreted in the breast milk or not after applied topically. Thus, lactating mothers should not use Crotamiton if it is not prescribed by your doctor.

Kidney Use With Care

Crotamiton should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease because it rapidly penetrates into the skin and excreted via urine. Patients with kidney disease would have problems in excreting Crotamiton's active substances which cause them to build up in the body. Liver Limited Data
