Erythromycin is commonly used in the treatment of bacterial eye infections, bacterial infections, bacterial skin infections and toxoplasmosis during pregnancy
Erythromycin is an antibiotic. Erythromycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It does so by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit irreversibly. This stops the translocation or transpeptidation and results in stunted cell growth.

Use of Erythromycin is acceptable during pregnancy. Animal reproduction studies do not demonstrate adverse effects on the fetus, and there are no adequate studies in pregnant women.
