Uses of Hydroxyurea

Hydroxyurea is commonly used to treat blood cancer such as acute and chronic myeloid leukemia, head and neck cancer and sickle cell anemia

How Hydroxyurea Works

Hydroxyurea inhibits an enzyme used to prevent the DNA formation. It interrupts with the cell cycle during cell division and sensitizes radiation activity. In sickle cell anemia, hydroxyurea increases red blood cell fetal hemoglobin levels, RBC water content, deformability of sickled cells, and alters adhesion of RBCs to endothelium.

Side Effects of Hydroxyurea

Reduced appetite, Skin cancer, Frequent infections due to bone marrow failure, Hallucination and disorientation, Dizziness, Somnolence, Difficulty breathing, Rash, Fatigue, Reduced fertility in men

Alcohol Safe

It is safe to consume alcohol with Hydroxyurea as there is no drug interactions.

Pregnancy Limited Data

Hydroxyurea may be unsafe to use during pregnancy as it can cause fetal harm. It has been proven to have teratogenic effects in animals.

Lactation Not Advisable

Hydroxyurea is not safe to be used during lactation as it is excreted in human milk.

Driving Not advisable

Hydroxyurea may cause side effects such as dizziness, headaches and tiredness, all of which could affect your ability to concentrate and drive.

Kidney Use With Care

Hydroxyurea should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Hydroxyurea may be needed hence frequent renal function monitoring is required. Please consult your doctor.

Liver Use With Care

Liver function monitoring is required prior to commencement of treatment.
