How Lacosamide Works

Lacosamide enhances the slow inactivation of voltage-gated Na channels without affecting the fast inactivation, resulting in the stabilisation of hyperexcitable neuronal membranes and inhibition of repetitive neuronal firing.

Side Effects of Lacosamide

Depression, Confusional, Difficulty sleeping (insomnia), Impaired balance, Somnolence, Tremor, Slurred speech, Blurred vision, Vomiting, Constipation

Lacosamide Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Lacosamide. Taking Lacosamide with alcohol may have additive effects of the central nervous system. It increases CNS depression.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Lacosamide may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus such as embryotoxicity at maternal toxic dose, however, there are limited human studies. Usage of the medication is carefully considered if the benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.

Lactation Limited Data

Lacosamide should be used with caution in lactating women. There is no information about the presence of Lacosamide in human milk. Nevertheless, significant adverse effect cannot be excluded.

Driving Not advisable

Lacosamide may cause side effects such as dizziness, blurry vision, all of which could affect your ability to concentrate and drive.

Kidney Use With Care

In patients with severe kidney disease, Lacosamide should be used with caution. Dose titration of Lacosamide may be needed according to renal function. Please consult your doctor.
