Uses of Lactulose

Lactulose is commonly used to relieve constipation and used for intestine preparation before any surgery. it also used to treat complication of liver disease which is hepatic encephalopathy.

How Lactulose Works

Lactulose increases peristalsis by creating an osmotic effect in the colon. Besides that, Lactulose also works by reducing the absorption of ammonium ions and toxic nitrogen hence reducing the increased blood ammonia concentrations in certain liver diseases.

Side Effects of Lactulose

Nausea, Vomiting, Flatulence, Abdominal cramps, Diarrhea

There is no known interaction of Lactulose with alcohol.
