Lumefantrine is an antimalarial medication. It interferes with the conversion of a toxic intermediate, haem to the nontoxic haemozoin. It also inhibits nucleic acid and protein synthesis. The exact mechanism of action of Lumefantrine is still unknown.
Decreased appetite, Difficulty sleeping (insomnia), Sleep disorders, Headache, Dizziness, Palpitations, Pins and needles, Cough, Diarrhea, Rash and pruritus
It is safe to consume alcohol with Lumefantrine as there is no known drug interaction.
Lumefantrine may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The usage of Lumefantrine in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.
There is no information regarding the excretion of Lumefantrine in human breast milk. Therefore, adverse effect of Lumefantrine can be excluded. It is probably unsafe to use during lactation.
Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Patients should be warned that Lumefantrine may cause side effects such as dizziness and headache which could affect your ability to concentrate and drive.
Lumefantrine should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. ECG and potassium monitoring is required in patients with severe kidney disease. No dose adjustment of Lumefantrine may be needed if patient has mild to moderate kidney disease.
Lumefantrine should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Nevertheless, no dose adjustment of Lumefantrine may be needed in mild to moderate liver disease.
