Melatonin is commonly used in the treatment of insomnia and jet lag.

How Melatonin Works

Melatonin is synthesized by the pineal gland and chemically resembles serotonin. Theoretically, the plasma levels of melatonin are high during the night and low during the day thereby regulating the circadian rhythm.

Melatonin Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

Alcohol reduces effectiveness of Melatonin. Thus, it is not to taken when on melatonin medication.

Pregnancy Limited Data

Clinical data on Melatonin is still unavailable. Based on the limited studies had been done, melatonin is not recommended for pregnant women.

Lactation Not Advisable

Melatonin is secreted into breast milk and is proven during animal studies as well. Therefore melatonin consumption is best avoided during breastfeeding.

Driving Not advisable

Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Melatonin may cause side effects such as drowsiness which could affect the ability to concentrate and drive.

Kidney Use With Care

The safety of using melatonin for patients with kidney disease has not been studied. However, melatonin should be used in caution in patients with kidney impairment. Please consult your doctor.

Liver Use With Care

Melatonin is not recommended in patients with liver disease. Limited data show elevated endogenous melatonin levels due to decreased clearance in patients with liver disease. Please consult your doctor for more details.
