Olaparib is commonly used to treat ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, primary peritoneal cancer and breast cancer.
Olaparib inhibits poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) enzymes, which are essential in the repair, regulation and formation of DNA in cancer cells. Inhibition causes formation of double stranded DNA breaks which cannot be repaired thereby leading to cell apoptosis in tumour cells.
