How Perampanel Works

Perampanel inhibits the AMPA glutamate receptor of the post-synaptic neurons non-competitively and reduces neuronal excitation by blocking glutamate in the central nervous system.

Alcohol Not Advisable

Consuming alcohol when taking Perampanel is strictly contraindicated due to potential worsening of side effect on the central nervous system.

Pregnancy Limited Data

Animal reproductive studies did not indicate fetal harm or toxicity but do show embryological toxicity. Human pregnancy data is limited and thus it is not recommended for Perampanel to be used during pregnancy.

Lactation Limited Data

It is not known whether Perampanel is excreted into human breastmilk or not. Due to its potential toxicity, Perampanel is not advisable to be used during breastfeeding. If being used during breastfeeding, alternative to the latter should be sought.

Driving Not advisable

It is not advisable to drive when under Perampanel treatment due to its potential side effects such as fatigue and dizziness which can affect the ability to concentrate and drive.

Kidney High Risk

Perampanel should be used with caution in people with mild renal impairment and is contraindicated for those with moderate to severe renal impairment.

Liver Limited Data

Perampanel should be used with caution in people with mild to moderate hepatic impairment together with dosage adjustment and is contraindicated for those with severe hepatic impairment.
