Pethidine is commonly used as anesthesia, and control of moderate to severe pain
Pethidine is an opioid analgesic. It activates opioid receptors in the nervous system by mimicking endogenous opioids which reduce the release of neurotransmitters and postsynaptic neuronal activity in the spinal cord leading to the prevention of transmission of pain impulses.
Hypotension, fatigue, drowsiness, dizziness, nervousness, headache, restlessness, malaise, confusion, depression, hallucinations, tremors, muscle twitches, increased intracranial pressure, seizure, rash, urticaria, nausea, vomiting, constipation, anorexia, stomach cramps, ureteral spasms, decreased urination, pain at inj site, physical and psychological dependence.
It is not advisable to drink alcohol with Pethidine as alcohol it can cause enhanced sedative and hypotensive effects of the medication.
Pethidine may be unsafe to use especially during early pregnancy. Animal studies have shown side effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.
Pethidine is shown to be excreted in breast milk. It is not advisable for women to breastfeed while consuming Pethidine because of its potential adverse drug effects on infants.
Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Pethidine may cause side effects such as delaying reaction time, dizziness or sleepiness, all of which could affect the ability to concentrate and drive.
Pethidine should be used with caution in patients with kidney impairment. Dose adjustment of Pethidine may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
