How Propylthiouracil Works

Propylthiouracil is able to bind to thyroid peroxidase which will lead to the prevention of iodide to iodine and incorporation of iodides to thyroglobulin. This mechanism will reduce the production of new thyroid hormones in patients

Side Effects of Propylthiouracil

Decreased white blood cells/platelets, Lupus-like syndrome, Cutaneous vasculitis, Skin rash, Joint pain, Fever, Gut disturbances, Headache, Agranulocytosis, Aplastic anaemia, Liver dysfunction

Propylthiouracil Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

Alcohol may further damage the liver which is caused by Propylthiouracil. Thus, it is not advisable to consume alcohol and Propylthiouracil concomitantly.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Animal studies and human studies have shown reproductive toxicities. Thus, Propylthiouracil is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Lactation Not Advisable

Excretion of Propylthiouracil has been found in human breast milk. Thus, it is contraindicated during breastfeeding.

Driving Generally Safe

There are no studies on the effect of Propylthiouracil on the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Kidney Use With Care

Dose adjustment is needed in patients with kidney impairment. Please consult your doctor.

Liver Use With Care

Dose adjustment is needed in patients with liver impairment. Please consult your doctor.
