Rifampicin is commonly used in the treatment of leprosy, tuberculosis (tb), and tuberculosis with hiv infection
Formation of chain for RNA synthesis in susceptible bacteria will be suppressed by Rifampicin. This happens by the binding to the alpha� subunit of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase which leads to blocking of RNA transcription which in turn killing the bacteria.
Facial flushing, Flu-like symptoms(Fever, Headache, Dizziness, Bone pain, Shortness of breath, Malaise), GI disturbance (Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrohea), Muscular weakness, Red discolouration of urine
It is more likely to cause liver damage if the patient takes Rifampicin simultaneously with alcohol.
Rifampicin is known to cross the placental barrier and reach the foetus but there is no well-controlled studies in pregnant women, therefore, the effect is not known. Animal studies have shown teratogenic effects in very high dose. Usage may be unsafe and it should be used when only the benefits outweigh the risks.
Rifampicin is shown to be excreted in breast milk. It is not advisable for women to breastfeed while consuming Rifampicin because of its potential adverse drug effects on infants.
There are no studies of Rifampicin on the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.
Rifampicin should be used with caution in patients with kidney impairment. Dose adjustment of Rifampicin may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Rifampicin is contraindicated in patients with jaundice. Dose adjustment of Rifampicin is necessary for patients with liver impairment. Please consult your doctor.
