Sodium clodronate is commonly used to treat hypercalcemia, osteoporosis in men and post menopausal osteoporosis.

How Sodium Clodronate Works

Sodium Clodronate is the first-generation bisphosphonate which can bind strongly to hydroxyapatite crystals in the bone matrix to strengthen the bone. It can also reduce the activity of osteoclast which is responsible for bone breakdown.

Side Effects of Sodium Clodronate

Allergy reaction, Skin rash, Increased parathyroid hormone level, Gut disturbances, Hypocalcemia, Osteonecrosis of the jaw, Acute kidney failure, Transient proteinuria, Transient increase of serum creatinine

Alcohol Safe

There is no known interaction between alcohol and Sodium Clodronate when used concomitantly.

Pregnancy Limited Data

Animal studies have shown reproductive toxicities but there are limited data on the use of Sodium Clodronate in pregnant women. Thus, it is not advisable to be used during pregnancy.

Lactation Not Advisable

Excretion of Sodium Clodronate is not known in human breast milk. Thus, it is not advisable to be used during breastfeeding.

Driving Generally Safe

Sodium Clodronate usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Kidney Use With Care

Dose adjustment is needed in patients with moderate to severe kidney impairment. It is contraindicated in kidney impaired patients with creatinine clearance less than 10ml/min.

Liver Use With Care

Sodium Clodronate is safe to be used in patients with liver impairment.
