How Spironolactone Works

Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic which is able to inhibit the aldosterone dependant sodium-potassium exchange channels in kidneys leading to increased excretion of sodium and water without affecting the potassium level.

Drowsiness, Dizziness, Fatigue, Headache, Leg cramps, Gut disturbances, Electrolyte disturbances, Gynaecomastia, Hirsutism, Menstrual irregularities, Breast pain, Deepening of voice

Spironolactone Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

Alcohol may accentuate the dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting caused by Spironolactone. Thus, it is not advisable to be consumed along with Spironolactone. Please consult your doctor.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Animal studies have shown reproductive toxicities but there are limited data on the use of Spironolactone in pregnant women. Thus, it is not advisable to be used during pregnancy. Please consult your doctor.

Lactation Not Advisable

Excretion of Spironolactone is found in small amount in human breast milk. Thus, it is not advisable to be used during breastfeeding. Please consult your doctor.

Driving Generally Safe

Spironolactone usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Kidney High Risk

Caution use and constant monitoring have to be conducted in patients with mild to moderate kidney impairment. Spironolactone is contraindicated in patients with severe kidney impairment. Please consult your doctor.
