What is atrial fibrillation?
Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common type of irregular heartbeat. It can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure, and other heart-related issues. In a healthy heart, the upper and lower chambers of the heart contract and relax to a regular beat because the sinus node directs the electrical rhythm consistently. In patients with AF, the upper chambers of the heart quiver irregularly, and can’t move blood into the lower chambers of the heart effectively. This occurs because other electrical impulses are sent out from abnormal areas of the heart, causing it to twitch.
