Overview

Melasma is a condition where brown or grey pigmentations are commonly found on skin primarily on the face. It is more common among females than males though males also can get it.

Brownish colored patches usually appear on the: cheeks,forehead,bridge of the nose,chin

Common Causes

Sun exposure,Change in hormones,Skin care products

Risk Factors

Pregnancy , Birth control pills , Hormone replacement therapy (HRT and progesterone) , Family history of melasma , Race , Anti-seizure medications

Investigation Techniques

Wood's lamp examination, Skin biopsy, Physical examination

Treatment and Prevention

Hydroquinone,Tretinoin, Corticosteroids, Chemical peels, Dermabrasion, Microdermabrasion
