Throat irritation may present as an itchy or lumpy feeling at the back of the throat or a dry cough. Sometimes, it can be accompanied by other symptoms such as runny nose, cough, fever, headache and body ache. There are a number of reasons which result in throat irritation. Some of the conditions include viral or bacterial infections, allergy, exposure to irritations such as smoke or dust, dry weather, post-nasal drip, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Many of these conditions which result in throat irritation can resolve on their own. Others are usually managed by treating the underlying cause. Some things that may help to relieve the discomfort are gargling with warm water, drinking plenty of fluids, sucking on lozenges, and sipping honey. Also, practice proper cough etiquette such as covering up your mouth and nose with a tissue when you sneeze and cough.
