Cinacalcet is commonly used in the treatment of high calcium levels in blood, hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism.
Cinacalcet is a calcimimetic agent. It works by increasing the sensitivity of the Ca-sensing receptors of the parathyroid gland towards extracellular calcium ions. Thus, it lowers the parathyroid hormone and leads to lowering of the serum calcium and phosphorus as well.
Nausea, Vomiting, Dizziness, Headache, Diarrhea, Constipation, Abdominal pain, Decreased appetite, Myalgia, Cough
There is no known interaction of Cinacalcet with alcohol.
Cinacalcet may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal reproduction studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus. However, there are limited well-controlled human studies. The benefits from the use of Cinacalcet in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.
Cinacalcet is probably safe to use during lactation. It is unknown if Cinacalcet is excreted in human breast milk. Limited human data suggests that Cinacalcet does not represent a significant risk to the baby. Please consult your doctor.
Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Cinacalcet may cause side effects such as dizziness, headaches, nausea or vomiting, all of which could affect your ability to concentrate and drive.
Cinacalcet should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. This is not recommended to use in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease who are not on dialysis. Dose adjustment of Cinacalcet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Cinacalcet should be used with caution in patients with moderate to severe liver impairment. Dose adjustment of Cinacalcet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
