How Tiotropium Works

Tiotropium is an antimuscarinic agent which inhibits the muscarinic receptors especially the M3 receptors found in the smooth muscle of the lungs. This will cause smooth muscle relaxation and dilates the airway.

Dry mouth, Allergy reaction, Dizziness, Hoarseness of voice, Palpitation, Visual disturbances, Lung infections

Tiotropium Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

There is no known interaction between alcohol and Tiotropium when consumed concomitantly. However, alcohol will also cause dizziness, blurring of vision and dry mouth which may be additive to patients suffering from side effects of Tiotropium.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Animal studies have not shown any reproductive toxicities and there are limited data of tiotropium on pregnant women. Thus, Tiotropium is not advisable to be used during pregnancy. Please consult your doctor.

Lactation Not Advisable

Animal studies have shown a small amount of excretion of Tiotropium in animal milk but it is unknown in human milk. Thus, Tiotropium is not advisable during breastfeeding. Please consult your doctor.

Driving Generally Safe

There are no studies on the effect of Tiotropium on the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Kidney Use With Care

Dose adjustment is needed in patients with moderate to severe kidney impairment.

Liver Use With Care

Tiotropium is safe to be used in patients with liver impairment.
