Valacyclovir is commonly used to treat chickenpox, hepatitis c virus hcv infection, eye infections by herpes simplex virus, genital herpes infection, herpes labialis, herpes simplex virus infections.

How Valacyclovir Works

Valacyclovir is an antiviral drug. It is converted to acyclovir by intestinal and hepatic metabolism. It inhibits DNA synthesis and viral replication by acting as the competitors to deoxyguanosine triphosphate for viral DNA polymerase and being consolidated into viral DNA.

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is not advisable to take valacyclovir with alcohol intake because it might worsen the side effects of Valacyclovir such as headache, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.

Valacyclovir is most likely safe to use during lactation. Furthermore, valacyclovir has been used to treat herpes virus infection in neonates. The American Academy of Paediatrics also classifies valacyclovir as compatible to be used for breastfeeding mothers.

Driving Generally Safe

There are no studies on the effect of Valacyclovir on the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Kidney Use With Care

Valacyclovir should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Inappropriate dosage for patients with renal impairments may worsen the renal condition. Dose adjustment of Valacyclovir may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

Liver Safe If Prescribed

Studies show that no dose modification needed in patient with mild to moderate cirrhosis who is on 1000mg of dose. Valacyclovir with a daily dose of 4000mg and above should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. The active substance of Valacyclovir is metabolized in the liver.
