Xylometazoline, which acts on alpha-adrenergic receptors in the arterioles of the nasal mucosa is a direct-acting sympathomimetic drug. This thus activates systemic vasoconstriction in people suffering from nasal congestion or blocked nose resulting in a decrease in blood flow in the nasal passages and consequently decreased nasal congestion.
