Will underweight cause irregular period?

Hi, I’m an 18 year old girl facing irregular periods and constant spotting from the start of February until today. Fortunately my periods don’t affect my daily life, I don’t feel tired easily, just sometimes have mood swings. Is it possible that my weight is causing my irregular periods? Because my BMI is 17 kg/m^2 and is considered as underweight, also recently I notice I have less appetite ever since MCO began. Please give me advice on the issue I’m facing, thank you.

Hello and good afternoon.
Thank you for your question.

Based on your question, I understand that you are worried about your problem. I will try to help you.

Based on your description, irregular periods can be due to several factors such as:

  • Stress
  • Hormonal imbalance - due to medication, other diseases, or simply due to young age
  • Low body weight
  • Excessive exercise
  • Hormonal contraceptives
  • Medical procedures that may influence the menstrual cycle

However, this issue can also be caused by other serious conditions that might need further evaluation by a doctor. Some of which includes:

  • Medical conditions: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or thyroid problems - these will usually be accompanied by other symptoms
  • Polyps
  • Uterine fibroids

I highly encourage you to speak with a trusted doctor to discuss your situation or any worries you may have related or unrelated to your irregular menstruation and lack of appetite. In order for us to provide you with an accurate management, we will need to further explore your current complaints. You can also contact our doctor online for further information and treatment.

I hope this answer helps you. Thank you.
