Who is at risk of dengue fever?
Hello Dr, my friends at school have been talking about getting a dengue vaccination. However, I think that I have never heard any cases in my neighborhood. So, I wonder, who is actually at risk of dengue fever?

Greetings and thank you for your question.
Anyone living in or traveling to places where dengue fever is common could catch it. This usually includes warm areas where mosquitoes like to live, such as tropical and subtropical regions. These mosquitoes, called Aedes mosquitoes, carry the dengue virus and spread it when they bite people. People of any age can get dengue fever, but some are at higher risk. These include those who haven’t had dengue before, travelers going to places where dengue is common, those living in areas with lots of mosquitoes and poor sanitation, people who work outside a lot, and pregnant women.
To avoid getting dengue fever, it’s important to protect yourself from mosquito bites. This means using bug repellents, wearing long sleeves and pants, and getting rid of standing water where mosquitoes breed. These steps can help lower the chance of getting sick with dengue. You can also protect yourself through getting a dengue vaccine such as Qdenga.
