UTI in baby for 2 months old
I have 2 month old baby. On 23/3/2022 her urine came positive on leucocyte. However, on that day, i take the sample using urine bag for baby. but mix with a bit from her poop. Today, the padiatric take the sample using clean catch method. May I know, if the urine positive again, how long my baby will be warded? and how can prevent UTI in future?
So far, my baby did not have fever. She is healthy.

Hello and good afternoon.
Thank you for your question.
Based on your question, I understand that you are worried about your problem. I will try to help you.
For your information, if your baby is well and has no symptoms after evaluation from the doctor, it shouldn’t warrant an admission. However, this would be up to the paediatrician to discuss and decide with you.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of things you could do to reduce the risk of UTI in your baby:
- Change diapers frequently
- Clean the genital area with clean water. Gently rinse and wipe from front to the back in one direction to prevent any germs from the buttocks to stain over the genitalia area.
- Be thorough with the cleaning during her baths or when she gets her diapers changed.
- Ensure good hydration of your baby by feeding regularly according to her capacity. At this age, your baby will get her adequate amount of hydration and nutrients from just breastmilk or formula. There’s no need to feed her extra water until she about 6 months old.
In order for us to provide you with a more accurate advice regarding her need to be warded, we would need more information like what was the indication of the urinary test in the first place. You should be able to get the most accurate assessment and management from the paediatrician once the results are back.
In the meantime, if you notice any change in behaviour of your baby such as a new onset high fever that doesn’t go down or if she’s drowsy and difficult to wake, or any other worrying symptoms please seek medical attention immediately.
If you’d like, you may contact our doctor online for further information or advice regarding this matter.
I hope this answer helps you. Thank you.
