Does sonic toothbrush motions hurt the gums?
I’m planning to buy a new electric toothbrush and cannot decide between a circular rotating vs an up-and-down (when the toothbrush is held horizontally) oscillating motion. I’ve been told that an up and down motion (using a manual toothbrush) can cause gum recession. Does the same happen with an electric toothbrush that also has up-and-down motion?

Hello!
Thank you for your query.
Based on the information above, we understand that you wanted an explanation about electric toothbrush and which motion can cause gum recession. We will try to help you.
For your information, gum recessions due to brushing your tooth usually occurs from overzealous brushing technique in a traumatic pattern to the gums. Neither manual or electric toothbrush will lead to gum recession. This fact is still the same when comparing motion of electric toothbrush which neither one motion is superior than the other.
The common mistakes done by people using electric toothbrush that lead to gum recession are:
- brushing too hard and treating electric toothbrush similar to manual motion
- toothbrush bristles are left damaged and hardened
- use of dominant hand leading to harsh brushing method
In the end, it all comes to your brushing technique. Though in general, most dentist do recommend using rotating oscillating toothbrush due to its significant benefit over manual toothbrush. For more information, please contact our doctors via online consultations. Hope this answers your question.
Thank you.
