Left area of waist is uncomfortable and it is pulsating hard. I suffer from frequent urination probably from consuming lots of plain water
I am 21 years old, female and I am diagnosed with my left kidney has a smaller size than my right one. Recently I felt that the left area of my kidney is pulsating hard and I urinate very frequently. I also consume many bottles of plain water to avoid UTI. Is this something I should be worried and what do you recommend I do? Thank you doctor.

Greetings! Thank you for your questions.
First and foremost, we truly understand your concerns regarding your symptoms and other health problems you might be facing. For your information, your kidneys are located are located just underneath the ribcage, the right kidney sits slightly lower than left kidney. The uncomfortable feeling of left area of your waist might be caused by problems in your left kidney or other organs near it. For example, muscle ache, nerve pain, joint pain, pancreatic disease, inflammation in rib joints or digestive issues.
Health authorities commonly recommend eight 8-ounce glasses of water, which equals about 2 liters, or half a gallon. It is said that too much consumption of water can lead to fluid overload in the body and imbalance in the body. Excess water can lead to lower sodium levels in the body, which may further lead to nausea, vomiting, cramps, and fatigue. From your complaints, I recommend you to seek for a treatment and evaluation/ physical exam from a doctor, if the symptom that you are facing irritates you or else other symptoms such as fever, vomiting and fatigue occur.
Besides, steps that you can take to reduce your risk of urinary tract infections are:
- Drink plenty of liquids, especially water. Plus, you can also try to drink some juices without added sugar which might be beneficial for your health instead of only drinking the plain water itself
- Wipe from front to back after urinating or after a bowel movement to prevent bacteria in the anal region from spreading to the vagina and urethra
- Empty your bladder soon after intercourse
- Avoid potentially irritating feminine products
