I felt sore throat and it’s hard for me to talk properly

I recently visited my cousin in the hospital, and he had been coughing almost all the time we visited him. The next day, i felt sore throat and it’s hard for me to talk properly. Could it be that i have also been infected with some sort of cough infection?

  • Hello there. Thank you for the inquiry. Sore throat is usually caused by several conditions such as viral infections, bacterial infections, allergies, dry air, smoke and chemicals as well as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In your case, given the hospital exposure, it may be due to a viral or bacterial infection.

  • A common cold is caused by viruses and gives rise to sore throat, sneezing and runny nose. After several days, it goes away. There is no cure for the cold, but there are known remedies available to relieve the symptoms. Steps such as gargling with salt water, taking honey and lemon as well as taking over the counter medication.

  • Adequate rest and hydration is equally important. On the other hand, bacterial infections of the throat that includes pharyngitis, laryngitis as well as tonsillitis gives a longer duration of sore throat. Strep throat is the most common bacterial infection in the throat caused by the streptococcus bacteria that spread by direct contact with nasal secretions or saliva.

  • The symptoms are fever, sudden sore throat, red tonsils and painful swallowing. To diagnose it, a throat swab will be taken by your doctor and it will be send to the lab to determine the cause. Strep throat may also be a sign of underlying conditions such as rheumatic fever. With antibiotics treatment, it should resolve within ten days.

  • Other causes such as smoking, air pollution and chemical may also cause a sore throat. Allergies to pollen, dust and chemicals may cause irritation in the throat. In GERD, the reflux of acid from the stomach causes irritation in the throat.

  • If you have persistent heartburn, your doctor will consider this diagnosis. I recommend that you consult a doctor if the sore throat does not resolve within 3 days. I hope this helps.
