I have read in the local newspaper about the different type of strokes

Hello doctor, I have read in the local newspaper about the different type of strokes and is there a type of stroke that are more dangerous than the other?

Hi, thank you for your question. A stroke is a serious life-threatening medical condition that happens when blood supply to an area of brain is cut off.
The two main causes of stroke areischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke. Ischaemic stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is interrupted due to a blood clot.

This type of stroke can be caused by either a clot forming in one of the arteries that supply the brain (thrombus) or a clot from elsewhere blocking one of the arteries (embolus). Meanwhile, haemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures. Some people may experience a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) (ministroke). Blood supply to the brain is temporarily cut off in this case, and there is no lasting symptoms or permanent tissue damage.

A few types of stroke which are more dangerous include haemorrhagic stroke, strokes that affect the brainstem, both sides (bilateral) of the brain and large thrombotic strokes. Haemorrhagic stroke often has a sudden onset and may cause complications like increased intracranial pressure and hydrocephalus, which may lead to severe brain damage or death.

Brainstem strokes are dangerous because the brainstem controls many important functions like breathing, heart rate and blood pressure. Bilateral stroke affects movement on both sides of the body and causes severe disability. Large thrombotic strokes can block one of the most important and largest blood vessels in the brain and cause high pressure in the brain.

Therefore, it is important to seek medical help as soon as possible if a stroke is suspected in order to minimise brain injury. Adopting a healthy lifestyle is also crucial to prevent stroke. You should eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, avoid excessive alcohol intake, quit smoking, maintain an ideal weight and keep blood pressure or cholesterol levels under control.
