Would like to ask about suitable food for my brother
Would like to ask about suitable food for my brother who is suffering from gout, diabetics and high blood pressure. He’s on medication for diabetics and BP…at times with headache and takes gout medication when the symptoms appear… now his feet looks red bcoz of gout. Appreciate advice if there is any dietitian here on details of food consumption

Hi there! Thank you for your question. For his gout food rich that has high purine content should be avoid such as:
- organ meats (brain, kidney and liver)
- game meats (veal, venison and pheasant)
- fish (sardine, tuna, haddock, herring, trout, mackerel, anchovies, haddock and more)
- other seafood (shrimp, crab, scallops and roe)
- sugary beverages (sodas and fruit juices)
- added sugars (corn syrup, honey and nectar)
- yeasts and refined carbs (cakes, biscuits and bread)
Research shows that high-purine vegetables do not trigger gout attacks. This is one exception to the rule.
There are researches that show that there are food that reduces uric acid levels or contains low purine levels. These include:
- Fruits. All fruits are generally fine for gout. Cherries may even help prevent attacks by lowering uric acid levels and reducing inflammation.
- Vegetables such as potatoes, peas, mushrooms, eggplants and dark green leafy vegetables.
- Legumes such as lentils, beans, soybeans and tofu.
- Nuts.
- Whole grains such as oats, brown rice and barley.
- Dairy products. All dairy is safe, but low-fat dairy appears to be especially beneficial
- Eggs
- Beverages such as coffee, tea and green tea.
- Herbs and spices
- Plant-based oils such as canola, coconut, olive and flax oils.
For his hypertension, foods that should be avoided are: - Fatty food (especially food high with saturated fat). Exampkes are red meat, oils rich in saturated fat, deep fried foods, cream, pastries and full fat dairy products.
- Salt. Examples are table salt, canned food, instant noodle and other food that are high with sodium
- Alcohol
As for his diabetes, food are high with carbohydrates (eg. bread, rice, potato chips) and sweets ( eg, sugar, sweet drinks, sweet desserts) should be kept to a minimum. Proper timing when eating also helps.
