What Test for finding Thalassemia?
Hi. I’m having alpha thalassemia trait.
So for my partner, what test should he take for checking whether he has thalassemia trait? Hb electrophoresis or DNA test?
If my partner going to take Hb electrophoresis test and the result mention he is fine, should he still proceed for DNA test? Does the earlier result have concluded he don’t have any thalassemia?
When should we go for DNA test? Any laboratory recommendations?
Thanks.

Hello and good morning
Thank you for your question.
Based on your question, I understand that you are worry about your problem. I will try to help you.
For your information, Special blood tests called hemoglobin electrophoresis and quantitation of hemoglobin A2 and hemoglobin F are a reliable way of determining whether or not a person has the trait for beta thalassemia (beta thalassemia minor). These blood tests are available at most large hospitals and clinics.
If your partner is going to take Hb electrophoresis test and the result mention he is fine, he does not need to proceed for DNA test. It is because the earlier result have concluded that he don’t have any thalassemia
Therefore, I advise you to refer to a doctor for a proper treatment. You can also have an online consultation with our doctors for more information and further treatments.
I hope this answer will help you. Thank you.
